The Literacy Support Service
Service Description
Ms Nadia Zammit, is the Head of Department Literacy within St. Ignatius College. This service seeks to promote and enhance lifelong and life wide, high quality literacy practices among children, youth, adults, third country nationals and persons with learning difficulties. It strives also to improve literacy outcomes, resulting in inclusive practices, higher educational qualifications, and better job prospects.
Key roles and responsibilities of the HoD Literacy include:
- Contributing to the formulation of the school Action Plan for literacy development.
- Coordinating and supporting Professional Development opportunities for colleagues.
- Holding regular meetings with SLT to discuss Literacy issues in the school.
- Advising the SLT on the procurement and management of adequate resources in classrooms and monitoring their utilisation.
- Contributing to literacy-rich environments in school through the implementation of reading schemes/materials with support children at the different levels of reading attainment.
- Contributing to the formulation of learning programmes as and when necessary.
- Organising parental meetings regarding Literacy.
- Developing resources.
- Developing and correcting of Literacy Assessments.
- Organising activities and events to promote Literacy in the schools (e.g. DEAR, Spellathon, Reading Events).
- Co-ordinating with other service providers to synergise services.
- Supporting class teachers through training during Curriculum Time.
- Providing in-class support through demo lessons and co-teaching sessions.
- Working with kindergarten staff to develop adequate pre-literacy skills.
- Contributing to the development of oral/aural language competences.
- Contributing to the implementation of the language policy.
- Developing a team-based approach to the development of literacy skills (together with the class teacher and the teacher for Complementary Education).
- Through team-based approach contributing to differentiated teaching and evaluating literacy levels.
- Keeping records and profiles and regularly monitoring progress in line with the Core Competences checklist.
