He was one of 13 children in family of minor nobility. As a young man Ignatius Loyola was inflamed by the ideals of courtly love and knighthood. His dream was that of doing great deeds.

In 1521 Ignatius was gravely wounded in a battle with the French. While recuperating, Ignatius Loyola experienced a conversion to Christianity. During the recovery period, Ignatius enjoyed reading the lives of Jesus and of different Saints. The latter arouse in him the desire to do great things in the name of Christ.

Over the years, Ignatius became expert in the art of spiritual direction. To date, Ignatius Loyola is considered as one of the biggest theologians of the Christian Church. Ignatius collected his insights, prayers, and suggestions in the book: Spiritual Exercises. Many consider this book as one of the most influential books on the spiritual life that has ever been written.

Together with a small group of friends, Ignatius Loyola founded the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, which community was approved by Pope Paul III in 1540. Ignatius was chosen as the first “Father General” (Superior General) by the Jesuits. During his period as Superior General, Ignatius sent his companions on spiritual missions across Europe to create schools, colleges, and seminaries. He also wrote the Jesuit Constitution, based on this principle: Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam or For the Greater Glory of God.

Every July 31, the Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, who is referred to as a “soldier for Christ” because Saint Ignatius of Loyola worked to strengthen the Kingdom of God on earth by trying to be like Christ in everything he did. Pope Pius XI in 1922 declared Ignatius Loyola as the patron saint of all spiritual retreats. He is also the foremost patron saint of all soldiers.

Short Videos to Introduce the Life of St. Ignatius of Loyola for Children

Video 1: Part 1: Story of St. Ignatius of Loyola (Story of Saints)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rMbCu5TuX0

Video 2: Part 2: Story of St. Ignatius of Loyola (Story of Saints)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DykAh_AyPOo

Reflections on St. Ignatius of Loyola

Will the Real Ignatius Please Stand Up? (Ron Darwen, SJ)

https://www.thinkingfaith.org/articles/20080730_1.htm

Ignatius of Loyola: Leader and Spiritual Master(Jaime E.
